For the longest time I have wanted to make my own kitchen table for my new apartment, before moving in I got to work using left over materials my brother-in-law had at his shop. The plan is to get all mis-matched chairs for the table, so far my roommates and I have picked up two from some local antique stores. This isn’t a step by step DIY, but more of a “this is what I did!” post, hopefully it can inspire you for future projects.
First, I chose different wood scraps to make up the table, they were all similar in height making the table a little uneven. I glued all the scraps down with wood glue following with a nail gun. Placing the pieces was the longest part, kind of like a puzzle. After, I straightened the edges by cutting it with a skill saw.
I sanded it down, stained it a neutral color and then put a sealer on top! After sealing the table, I sanded down the remaining rough spots.
For the legs, I glued four 2×4’s together that were 30 inches tall and then sanded them through a fancy machine called a wide belt sander. I finished it off with 2×4’s around the sides for extra support.
I plan to carve in the bottom when I made the table and a little saying..I just want to find the perfect thing to say first.
A kitchen table can be intimidating because it is an everyday use DIY, but I encourage you to take the step and just go for it! I didn’t do much research before, I just did more dreaming in my head and my brother-in-law, Aric, helped me execute it and let me use his shop and tools!
This is one of the biggest projects I have taken on, I’ll share my other big project soon! What is the biggest project you have taken on?
The midwest is finally getting some rain which is perfect for staying inside and working on projects that have been scribbled in my notebook for the longest time. I hope you enjoy your Saturday!
